Connecting to Tailscale

We use Tailscale to connect our GCP VPC as well as GPU worker nodes from various other places into a VPN. For development and troubleshooting purposes it is helpful to be able to connect to this VPN from a dev machine. That is possible as follows:

Running Tailscale on MacOS

If you have installed Tailscale via the brew package manager you might have to run sudo brew services start tailscale once before running any of the commands below.

  1. Make sure that you are part of the /people directory and are a member of the tailscale group and that the tailscale Terraform is applied.

  2. On your dev machine, run sudo tailscale up --accept-routes --accept-dns=true.

  3. Try to ping any pingable GCP entity, e.g. a VM to double check you have VPN access.
